10 Reasons Your Baby Isn't Sleeping

As a new parent, it can be disheartening to find that your baby is struggling to sleep, especially when you expect them to be sleeping for most of the day. Newborns generally need 16 to 20 hours of sleep per day, but there can be various reasons why your baby isn't sleeping.

What are the possible causes of your baby's sleep problems and how can you help them get better rest?

1. Hunger

Newborns have tiny stomachs and cannot go long without needing a snack. If your baby wakes frequently, hunger may be the cause. Breastfed babies tend to eat every two hours, while formula-fed babies may have a 3 to 4-hour interval between feedings. Remember that newborns cannot sleep through the night without waking to feed. Trust your instincts and feed your baby on demand. This promotes milk production and postpartum recovery.

2. Too High Temperature

Newborns cannot regulate their body temperature like adults, making them more vulnerable to both overheating and cold. Rather than checking your baby's hands or feet temperature, feel their nape. If it's too warm, they might be overheating. A comfortable room temperature of 18-20°C, a well-humidified environment, and fresh air can help your baby sleep more comfortably.

3. Early Signs of Illness

If your baby is very fussy, unsettled, or not sleeping well, it could be a sign that they are starting to get sick. Babies often show behavioral changes before clear symptoms appear. If you notice a fever or warmth in your baby, try to hydrate them and monitor their temperature.

A slight fever can sometimes be a sign of teething, so you can try soothing remedies like a chilled teething ring.

4. Discomfort or Pain: Colic

Colic can cause sudden awakenings and intense crying. Your baby may pull their legs up, have a hard stomach, and appear distressed. Colic often resolves with time, but in the meantime, offering comfort, a gentle stomach massage, or an anti-colic herbal tea can help. Another option is to use an anti-colic bottle, like the Mammafeel, specially designed to reduce air intake during feeding and limit discomfort.

According to a study, 60% of respondents rated MammaFeel 10/10. On average, MammaFeel scored 8.8 (study conducted from January to July 2025 among 23 respondents).

If crying persists without improvement, consult your pediatrician to rule out any medical issues.

5. Constipation

A baby suffering from constipation can experience discomfort, which prevents deep sleep. For breastfed babies, ensure your diet is rich in fiber. If your baby is older, offer water between feedings to aid digestion. A gentle stomach massage can relieve discomfort, and glycerin suppositories are a safe option if needed, but always consult your pediatrician before using them.

6. A Full Diaper

Wet or soiled diapers are a simple reason why your baby isn't sleeping. To make the nighttime diaper changing process easier, ensure low lighting and avoid loud noises. This will help your baby fall back asleep faster.

7. Discomfort from Clothing or Bedding

Uncomfortable clothing or scratchy fabrics can be the cause of your baby's restless sleep. Before bedtime, check that their pajamas are soft and their bedding is smooth. This simple step can make a big difference and help them sleep better.

8. Overstimulation During the Day

Too much excitement or activity can prevent your baby from settling down in the evening. A soothing bedtime routine can work wonders. Try a warm bath, a gentle massage, or soft lullabies to signal to your baby that it's time to relax. Establishing a consistent routine will also help them learn when it's time to sleep.

9. Sensitivity to Noise

Loud and sudden noises or background chatter can startle your baby and prevent them from falling asleep. On the other hand, some babies enjoy background noise. You can try soft music or a white noise machine to help your baby drift off peacefully.

10. Seeking Comfort and Need for Closeness

Newborns need closeness and security. If your baby wakes up crying, try holding them, cuddling them, and gently comforting them. This reassurance can help them fall back asleep. By meeting your baby's need for closeness and comfort, you allow them to feel secure and relaxed.
