At what age can your baby use a pacifier?

You can give your baby a pacifier from birth. If you are breastfeeding, it is wise to wait until feeding is well established, which is often after two to four weeks. Once your baby feeds comfortably and gains weight, you can introduce a pacifier without worry.

Why the first weeks need a little care

Many parents hear they should wait four weeks. That advice exists to protect early breastfeeding. A newborn first has to combine sucking, swallowing and breathing smoothly.

For a baby who already feeds well, this is rarely an issue. Sucking on a pacifier works differently from sucking at the breast or bottle. If you are unsure, ask your midwife or child health clinic.

Which size suits which age

Babies have a strong need to suck in their first months. A pacifier meets that need and offers comfort. The size does have to match the mouth.

Difrax uses five sizes. For the smallest mouths there are pacifiers for newborns, with a compact shield and a soft teat. Next come the pacifiers for 0 to 6 months, followed by 6-12, 12-18 and 18+ months. The teat becomes slightly firmer with each size, because sucking strength increases.

Treat the age on the pack as guidance, not a rule. One child is simply smaller than another.

How to tell a bigger size is needed

Your baby will show you. Watch for these three signs:

  • The pacifier falls out of the mouth easily.
  • Your baby keeps pushing it out.
  • The shield leaves a visible mark on the cheeks.

If you notice these, a larger size will probably feel better. Our guide on which pacifier your baby needs explains what changes per size.

An honest look at the downsides

A pacifier has drawbacks too. Some children become very attached, which makes stopping harder later on. And a pacifier lost at night means a broken night.

On the other hand, a pacifier helps your baby learn to settle themselves. A thumb does something similar, but you cannot replace a thumb.

Safe use from day one

Pacifiers sold in Europe must meet the EN 1400 standard. It sets requirements for material, dimensions and strength. So the pacifier is safe when you buy it.

After that, it is down to you. Pull firmly on the teat before every use and look for cracks, weak spots or bite marks. Replace the pacifier every six weeks, even if it still looks fine. You will find more in our tips for safe pacifier use.

Has your child started biting the pacifier? Then phase it out and switch to a teething ring.
