Can a baby bottle go in the dishwasher?

Yes, most baby bottles are dishwasher safe. However, there are two things you need to pay attention to. Always place the bottles on the top rack – the intense heat at the bottom can deform and damage plastic. In addition, choose a program of at least 55°C for effective cleaning.

Always disassemble the bottle completely before washing: bottle, ring, and nipple separately. This way, the water reaches all parts, and no milk residue is left behind in seams or crevices.

Not all nipples and pacifiers are dishwasher safe. For example, the Difrax LOVI pacifier is not suitable for the dishwasher. Therefore, always check the product's instructions for use before putting it in the machine.

From what age do I no longer need to sterilize?

From six months of age, sterilization is no longer necessary after every wash for most healthy babies. At this age, the immune system is strong enough to resist bacteria that remain after normal use. Thorough washing with warm water and a mild dish soap specifically for baby products is then sufficient.

Nevertheless, pediatricians advise continuing sterilization until the age of one year as an extra precaution, especially if your baby has a weaker health or is frequently ill.

Even after six months, there are situations where you should still sterilize: if your baby is sick or has just recovered, after using a new bottle or nipple, if the bottle has fallen on the floor, or if the bottle has not been used for a long time. In these cases, sterilization is still the safest choice.

What is the difference between washing and sterilizing?

Washing and sterilising are two different steps, each with its own purpose, and they complement rather than replace each other.

Washing removes visible dirt such as milk residue, porridge residue, and food particles. You do this with warm water and a mild dish soap, by hand or in the dishwasher. Washing is the basic step after every use. Without thorough washing, sterilising is largely pointless, as bacteria can hide under leftover food residues.

Sterilising goes a step further. It kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi that may still be present after washing—even if the bottle looks clean. This can be done in various ways: boiling in water, with a steam steriliser, a microwave steriliser, or sterilisation tablets.

The most important thing to remember: washing cleans, sterilising disinfects. For newborns, you need both. You always wash first to remove residues and then sterilise to kill any bacteria.
