The difference between a first and second pregnancy

Are you pregnant for a second time and wondering if this pregnancy will be similar to the last? Not necessarily.

Each subsequent pregnancy may or may not resemble the previous one. It's possible that it will be a simple copy-paste of the first pregnancy for you, but you might also find that everything is different. Discover how your second pregnancy can vary.

Less stress

Generally, when you are expecting another child, you are much calmer than the first time. You have more experience and are more aware of what is happening. You will probably no longer memorize a pregnancy book and will not worry about small things. You know more or less what to expect, which brings you more serenity.

More responsibilities

If your second pregnancy is not too far from the first, it means you have a toddler at home demanding your attention. This means you may be more tired and less focused on your own needs. If your first child is small and doesn't sleep at night, you may also be sleepy all day. All of this can explain why you will be much more tired and irritable during the second pregnancy. Try to rest whenever you have the opportunity. If possible, ask someone to take your toddler for a walk and take advantage of it to take a good nap.

Your belly rounds out earlier

After a pregnancy, your body changes. That's why during the second pregnancy, the muscles relax faster to make room for the growing uterus, and your belly becomes visible earlier than the first time, sometimes even by several weeks. This is completely normal, you should not worry.

Fetal movements felt earlier

During the second pregnancy, you are likely to feel the baby's movements earlier. This does not mean that the child is developing differently. There are essentially two reasons why you feel the movements earlier. Firstly, it is easier for you to recognize them. During the first pregnancy, without experience, it is more difficult. Secondly, your muscles are no longer as firm and you begin to feel the fetus growing and moving faster.

More significant weight gain

During the second pregnancy, it is common to gain a little more weight than in the first. This can be explained by the fact that your body has not yet fully returned to its weight before the first pregnancy. This weight gain can sometimes be accompanied by stretch marks, especially because the skin becomes a little less elastic. To take care of your skin, remember to moisturize it daily with a gentle balm or oil. What really matters is regularly and gently massaging the skin, more than the choice of product. No need to spend a fortune on creams; the action and consistency make all the difference.

Earlier and stronger preliminary contractions

It’s almost the same as with the baby's first movements: you already know what to expect and what it feels like, so you can detect the first contractions earlier. Contractions during the second pregnancy can also be stronger, which is often a sign of shorter labor.

Easier and faster labor

After a first birth, your body changes. These changes facilitate the second birth, which is generally faster and less painful. The birth canal is more relaxed, the muscles are less firm, and the pelvis is wider. The cervix opens faster, and the second birth usually finishes several hours sooner than the first.

Important Note!

If the first delivery was a C-section, it does not mean that next time you will also need a C-section.
