11 tips to prepare for natural childbirth
Childbirth is a natural process, but a little preparation can make all the difference. By taking care of your body, learning useful techniques, and planning ahead, you can approach labor with calm and confidence. Here are 11 ways to guide you in preparing for a natural birth and welcoming your baby serenely.
1. Midwife: choose and build a trusting relationship
Meet your midwife during the second trimester. This helps you feel safe and supported during labor and contributes to preparing for your natural birth.
2. Maintain good physical condition
Childbirth is physically demanding, like running a marathon. Being fit helps you better manage pain and fatigue. Ask your doctor which exercises are safe: swimming, yoga, or walking, for example.
3. Do Kegel exercises
Strengthening pelvic floor muscles makes labor faster and recovery easier. Contract the muscles for 5 to 10 seconds, then release. Do this exercise regularly, three times a day, to prepare for your natural birth and facilitate postpartum recovery.
4. Write a birth plan
Note your preferences: pain management, attendees, labor positions, etc. This helps clearly communicate your needs to the medical staff.
5. Decide: childbirth with or without a partner?
Discuss openly with him whether he wants to be there and prepare him for what he will experience.
6. Carefully pack your maternity bag
About four weeks before your due date, pack your bag so you don't forget anything and reduce stress.
7. Practice breathing exercises
Good breathing (like diaphragmatic breathing) helps you stay relaxed and reduce pain. Consider taking childbirth preparation classes to learn these techniques and better prepare for your natural birth.
8. Perineal massage
From the 34th week, this massage can reduce the risk of tearing or the need for an episiotomy. Ask your doctor for advice before starting.
9. Remain sexually active
If your pregnancy is uncomplicated and your doctor agrees, sexual intercourse in late pregnancy can naturally stimulate labor through prostaglandins and oxytocin.
10. Decide how to manage labor pain
Discuss options with your doctor: pharmacological (epidural, injections, analgesic gas) and non-pharmacological (bath, aromatherapy, music). An informed choice helps you prepare for your natural birth.
11. Drink raspberry leaf infusions
After the 36th week, drinking 2 to 3 cups a day can help soften and prepare the cervix, potentially reducing the duration of labor. Do not consume before, as this could cause premature contractions.
