How to increase lactation - 14 methods

How to increase lactation is a question many mothers ask, especially during the first weeks of breastfeeding.

Worried your baby isn't getting enough milk? You're not alone. But in most cases, the fear of low milk supply is unnecessary. If your baby is gaining weight steadily, you can hear them swallow during feeds, and they wet 6-8 diapers a day, you're probably doing very well.

Nevertheless, if you want to encourage your body to produce more milk, here are 14 simple and natural ways to support and increase lactation.

1. Believe in yourself

Milk production starts in the mind. Confidence and motivation are key to successful breastfeeding. When you trust your body and stay committed, most challenges that arise can be managed with patience and support. This attitude plays an important role in increasing lactation.

2. Manage stress effectively

Stress can disrupt your body's natural rhythms, including milk production. Try to set aside time each day to breathe, stretch, read, or take a quiet walk. Before each feed, take a few deep breaths and approach it calmly; your state of mind is important for increasing lactation.

3. Rest whenever you can

Sleep may seem impossible, but even short naps can make a difference in increasing lactation. Rest helps your body recover and balance the hormones involved in milk production.

4. Ask for help if needed

Fatigue and overwhelm reduce milk production. Lean on your support system. If someone offers to help with housework, cooking, or baby care, say yes. Use this time to rest or take care of yourself.

A poor latch can prevent your baby from effectively emptying the breast, impacting milk production. Try different positions and observe where your baby feeds best. A lactation consultant can help you identify problems if needed.

6. Feed on demand

Follow your baby's cues. The more your baby nurses, the more milk your body produces. This is a supply and demand process, and frequent feeds are the best natural stimulant to increase lactation.

7. Don't skip nighttime feeds

Nighttime feeds are crucial, as it's during the night that your body produces the most prolactin (the hormone that produces milk). Skipping them can slow down your milk production.

8. Offer both breasts at each feeding

Let your baby nurse from both sides. This helps balance milk drainage and tells your body to continue (and even increase) production in both breasts.

9. Ensure the breast is fully emptied

If your baby falls asleep during feeding, gently wake them up to continue. If they don't completely empty the breast, use a breast pump to extract the remaining milk. The more milk is expressed, the more your body is stimulated to produce it, increasing lactation.

10. Avoid unnecessary infant formula

Each bottle of infant formula replaces a chance to stimulate your own milk production. Only give supplements on the advice of a trusted healthcare professional. When in doubt, consult a lactation expert first.

11. Do not give your baby water

Breast milk is both food and a source of hydration. Even in hot weather, your baby does not need extra water. Offer the breast more often; the foremilk is more watery and perfect for quenching thirst.

12. Stay hydrated

Milk is largely made up of water, which is why your hydration level is important. Drink regularly, especially water and breastfeeding-friendly herbal teas like fenugreek or fennel. Always adhere to recommended dosages for infusions.

13. Use a breast pump if necessary

If your baby doesn't completely empty your breasts, or if you want to increase your lactation, use a manual or electric breast pump after feedings or between sessions.

14. Consult a breastfeeding specialist

If you are still struggling with milk production despite the above methods, it's time to seek professional help. A certified lactation consultant can assess the problem and recommend personalized strategies or, if necessary, discuss safe medical options.
