Milk variations: recipes with baby formula

Breastfeeding is widely recognized as the most beneficial nutrition during the first year. But when breastfeeding is not possible, infant formula offers a safe and balanced alternative, adapted to a baby's digestion.

As babies grow and open up to new flavors, some may show less interest in milk. This is completely normal. The key is to continue providing the essential nutrients found in infant formula or dairy products.

To help parents approach this transition creatively, here is a selection of recipes with infant formula that are simple and nourishing. These dishes offer variety and enjoyment while retaining essential nutritional benefits.

Important note: always use dishes prepared with infant formula immediately. Prepare only what your child will consume in one go and discard any leftovers.

Breakfast

From the start of solid food introduction (around 6 months), porridges made from semolina, cornflour or millet are excellent options. Rich in complex carbohydrates, iron, and vitamins, they are perfect for energetic mornings or comforting evening meals.

Semolina for a good start to the day (from 6 months+)

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp semolina

  • ~1 cup water

  • Infant formula (as directed, for 200 ml of water)

  • Optional: fruit puree suitable for their age

Preparation:
Mix the semolina cold in water, bring to a boil, and cook for a few minutes. Let the semolina cool to about 40–50°C, add the semolina to the infant formula, then finish with a little fruit puree. You can replace semolina with cornflour for variety.

Soft gluten-free pancakes (from 8 months)

Ingredients:

  • 200 ml prepared infant formula

  • 1 egg yolk

  • ½ cup cornflour

  • A little oil for cooking

Preparation:
Mix all ingredients. Cook in a lightly oiled pan until the pancakes are golden. Serve sweet with fruit puree or savory with tender cooked vegetables.

Lunch

Around 6 months, vegetables become the central food. Exposing babies to mild and varied flavors from the beginning promotes healthy eating habits for life.

Broccoli Soup "Green Delight" (from 6 months)

Ingredients:

  • 50 ml infant formula

  • A few broccoli florets

  • Water

  • Optional: a knob of butter or a drizzle of olive oil

Preparation:
Cook the broccoli until tender, drain, then mash or blend. Stir in the infant formula and butter or oil. Gently reheat before serving. You can then add potato, cauliflower or small blended pieces of tender meat.

Rice pudding (from 6 months)

  • 1 to 2 tsp rice

  • Water

  • Infant formula

  • Optional: cooked vegetables, meat or fruit

Preparation:
Rinse the rice and cook until tender. Let it cool, add the infant formula, then top with vegetables or fruit for a complete meal.

Snack or dessert

Soft textures and a touch of natural sweetness turn snack time into a delicious and healthy moment.

“Yummy” pudding (from 8 months)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 tsp potato starch

  • 1 egg yolk

  • Infant formula

Preparation:
Bring half of the water to a boil. Mix the starch and yolk in the remaining cold water, then add to the boiling water. Simmer, let cool, then stir in the infant formula. Serve plain, or with soft fruits.

Smoothie of the day (from 8 months)

Ingredients:

  • Boiled and cooled water

  • Infant formula

  • Fruits: apple, banana, raspberries, kiwi (max 2–3 varieties)

Preparation:
After boiling and cooling the water, wash and briefly blanch the fruits. Blend everything with the infant formula for a fresh drink, rich in fibre and flavours.

Dinner

Dinner should be light but filling, with cereals and dairy products ideal for soothing baby before bedtime.

Fruity oatmeal porridge (from 8 months)

Note: oats contain gluten.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp of rolled oats

  • ~70–90 ml of water

  • Formula milk

  • ½ banana

Preparation:
Cook the oats in water until tender. Let cool to 60 °C then add the formula milk and mash the banana. The fiber and B vitamins in oats promote digestion and sleep.

"Green" cream cheese spread (from 11 months)

Ingredients:

  • 50 g of cream cheese

  • 50 ml of prepared formula milk

  • Fresh herbs: parsley, chives, dill (finely chopped)

Preparation:
Mash the cheese, mix with warm formula milk, then add the herbs. Serve with soft bread or with a small spoon.

Introduce one ingredient at a time, waiting a few days before adding another. Offer new foods during the day, which helps monitor for any reactions and ensures a peaceful night.
