Internship at Difrax: The world of E-commerce

A second-year International Business student here! A program that prepares you for an international career. That's why I emigrated to the Netherlands from Suriname two years ago. My name is Sandjana, and I'll share my experiences during my internship with you!

The differences in E-commerce and marketing

It all started with my first meeting with my internship supervisor, Esther. During my introductory meeting, she explained the difference between e-commerce and marketing. In e-commerce, you work on the webshop, conducting analyses, and developing strategies to boost sales. Marketing is more focused on communicating brand value. The marketing department works on social media content, working with influencers, and creating advertisements, among other things. So, the marketing department is heavily involved in the creative side of things.

Even though I'm a creative person, I still wanted to intern in the e-commerce department because I wanted to delve into managing a webshop and analyzing data. Esther suggested I also take on marketing tasks during my internship. This gave me a taste of both worlds. So I was offered a very varied internship!

My responsibilities and tasks

During my internship, my focus was primarily on managing the webshop. I had the opportunity to perform various tasks, including editing website content, publishing blog posts, deleting or editing pages, and more. I also created new collections for the website and set up a content hub where I categorized all the blog posts. A content hub is a collection of content. Want to see the content hub I created? You can by clicking here ! I also collaborated with the marketing department. Together, we created a checklist for breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and baby care.

Data and insights

Data is at the heart of every e-commerce strategy. As an intern, I had the opportunity to work with various analytics tools and reports, gaining insights into customer behavior, marketing campaign performance, and sales results. It was fascinating to see how this data was used to inform decisions and improve Difrax's overall performance. I also learned how to work with various tools such as Google Console, Google Ads, Google Analytics 4, and many other useful tools.

I always started my week on Monday, tracking the results of the social campaigns and the Bol.com offer feed. A bol.com offer feed is a data feed that contains product information, prices, and availability. I also did reporting, tracking sales on Bol.com, and analysis. This involved analyzing the results on Bol.com. Then I looked at my to-do list in the Trello board. This is a tool I used to manage my tasks. I tackle tasks that still need to be done there. It's different every time. One time I'll be setting up a new campaign with my colleagues, another time I'll be adding new images to the website.

Lifelong lessons

The most enjoyable part of my internship was being involved in optimizing the user experience. Looking back on my time at Difrax, I'm incredibly grateful for the experience and knowledge I gained. It was a valuable and educational experience that broadened my understanding of e-commerce and prepared me for a successful future.
