Frequently asked questions about the Hands-free Breast pump
The Difrax Hands-free Breast Pump is a 2 phase pump. Phase 1 is the stimulation setting. The pump makes short suction actions to induce a let-down reflex. This helps the milk start to flow. We recommend you start your session with the pump set to Phase 1. Phase 2 is the pump setting. You have the choice of using the regular expressing mode or the intensive expressing mode. Both phase 1 and phase 2 have 8 levels of suction power and speed in all modes. The pump has enough suction settings to find the right suction power for different preferences and situations.
Yes. Just make sure your upper body remains upright while expressing. Do not lean forward or backward more than 45°. If you are inexperienced with expressing milk, we recommend you build in a rest period during the session. Holding your baby while expressing can also have a stimulating effect.

Note! Expressing milk should not be painful, and the highest setting is not always the best or fastest setting. The setting at which the milk starts to flow well is the correct setting. The correct setting may differ per breast or each time you express. It is normal for the milk to flow sporadically, in short bursts. We recommend returning to let-down mode or switching breasts if you are expressing with a single breast pump.
An expressing bra (also called a nursing bra/pumping bra) is specially designed to be worn while expressing so you can have your hands free to do other activities. An expressing bra is designed to fit a regular breast pump, which has a funnel-shaped chest piece attached to a bottle. For the Difrax breast pump, an expressing bra is not required. The pump fits completely into the shell of your bra. If you are wearing a breastfeeding bra, you can detach the cup at the front to feed the baby directly. It is not necessary to use a breastfeeding bra with the Difrax pump, but it is possible.
The set includes an inner shell (24 mm) and three additional insert sizes (17,19 and 21 mm). A well-fitting inner shell is important for comfortable and efficient expressing. To find the right size, measure the size of your nipple. The nipple determines the size of the inner shell, and not the size of your breast. Measuring your nipple is very simple. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure the diameter of the nipple at the base, excluding the areola. No two breasts are the same, so you may need different sizes for each of your breasts. Therefore, you should measure the nipples of both breasts.
Take note of the following
- The nipple should be able to move freely within the shell.
- Make sure the areola is not pulled into the breast shield.
- When you fit the shield, 1-2 mm of space around the nipple is normal.
- A shield that is too large or too small can lead to pain, damaged skin and poor production.
- Never express milk for longer than 30 minutes.
Definitely! The breast pump is a useful tool during the breastfeeding period. In the initial phase, the pump can help initiate or maintain breastfeeding, especially when your child is not yet used to latching on. This often happens under the guidance and advice of a professional, such as a lactation consultant or maternity nurse.
The pump can also be used during breastfeeding to build up a supply of expressed milk. This is useful for those times you are unable to physically feed, for example when you are back at work or temporarily need to supplement with expressed milk under the supervision of a professional.
